September 11, 2020 | Tribute in Light https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/8/september-11-2020 Every year the light shines on us in memory of the tragic events that took place on September 11th.  September 11, 2020 the twin columns will not be projected into the sky this year because of Covid-19 concerns for the workers who put it together to make it shine. Instead of the luminous beams, the memorial and museum is planning to honor the anniversary with an alternative that will involve buildings across the city illuminating their spires and facades with blue lights. This illumination will start at dusk on September 11 this year and last until the following dawn.

The beams were first projected on March 11, 2002, six months after the attack, and only three months after fires at the trade center were officially declared extinguished.  Close to 40 stagehands and electricians work in proximity for more than a week as part of producing the tribute.  The source of light consists of 88 specially made Cannon lights, each with a 7,000 watt compressed gas bulb. The lights are powered by generators, are sent out on the roof of a garage on Greenwich Street in two squares of approximately 50 by 50 feet.

I haven't missed a year photographing the event and the night time sky. These photos will remain timeless for all of those who captured this radiant night sky. These are some of my photographs taken throughout the years including a saved photo from approximately 1974 with a Kodak Instamatic camera loaded with 110 film. All photos have been preserved in several formats including archival with the Library of Congress. Copyrighted all Images, Jackie Stevens Images 1974-2020, 2021-Library of Congress, Storage and Archival Photography Historical Department, Washington, D.C.

Photographer's Delight https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/7/photographers-delight There may be a time when you are blessed by a community. I have been very fortunate to be a part of a truly amazing photography community.  From the stellar professionals who have illustrated that a photograph is truly a reflection of one self. The photograph taken is a story, not just an image. The strength and determination, endured showing through the unnecessary chaos holds the foundation of character and integrity.  Their generosity of time, patience, and willingness to share is wholeheartedly appreciated.

To the amateur photographer who's thirst for education and experimenting is a creative grasp as to what is yet to come.  Their style and creativity shaped allows us to see their progress and hope.  To the beginner photographer who's fortitude yields a vast array of directions is selected.  Their paths lead to photography members where this great community is formed.

It is with great gratitude and the fine respect of one another that holds this community together.  Their unique styles are intriguing, some are timeless, and others are a true sense of expression which is gift yielded to another. We keep supporting each other, and providing the greatness we have embarked. The pure genuineness of a person is within their deep personality, which we have all come to love.

Why do photographers wake up at 4:00am? https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/9/why-do-photographers-wake-up-at-4-00am Most photographers will tell you they wake up early, and some do.  Some won't.  I do.  In my opinion, the best photographs happen with the rising sun between 4:00am-6:30am.  I have spent many times with other photographers reluctantly getting up on a weekend, with no plan in sight. As we move together silently photographing the landscape before us, we are delighted to come across amazing scenes.  They are only for us, ones to capture, and will continue to inspire us.

As sunrise is currently 6:42am EST, there is plenty of opportunity to photograph just before this hour. Photos taken: September 2019.

Why do photographers photograph so early?

1.  Best parking!

2.  Beat any kind of crowds.

3.  Mosquitos aren't feeding.

4.  The light is crisp and bright.

5.  Great control of early light.

6.  Always meet new and interesting people.

7.  Nature puts on its best show.

8.  Cast of color is perfect, less post processing.

9.  Its generally cool and comfortable.

10.  Sunrises are spectacular.

How do you choose ten images that are your best? {From a total of a million images}. https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/8/how-can-you-choose-your-top-ten-images Jackie Stevens Images: Total photographs taken to date: 1,289,707 give or take a few recently deleted.

An overwhelmingly daunting task when an Editor calls to request ten images of your best work.  From a previous portfolio review, my work has evolved while creating fine art documentary images.  Searching through thousands of negatives, hundreds of digital files, and finding lost images was different than I had imagined.  Rather than viewing the image for best composition and stunning light, the viewing yielded the thoughts of when the original image was actually taken. The exact moments leading up to the capture is how the image was selected.

It's when everything cleared the precious four square feet of available space to slide in-invisible to anyone surrounded by pure silence.  The silence was the art being created, the thought process and the careful consideration to the finished product.  The connection between the two, with no interruption, no looking up or recognizing a photographer is there capturing the shot.

This is the only image taken during this brief encounter. I could have stayed, lingered and captured different angles. Here, this is the image I quickly envisioned; encapsulating the genuine feeling.  The location and place is unknown, forgotten-when I see this image I remember everything about the mood and nothing else.  I recall how incredibly silent it was, even with the humming of the ink applicator, there still remained complete concentration and deep silence.  The patience is what I remember right before I released the shutter-this is what I saw through the lens-I adored it, applauded it, and honored it-while taking it all in.

This is how I go about choosing my best ten images in my vast library.

Extreme Heat and Necessary Mosquitoes https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/7/extreme-heat-and-necessary-mosquitoes Remembering the hottest Day at Robert Moses 2016 5:39 AM.

Waited here with a fellow photographer for an hour or so; welted with bites as the mosquitoes rise with dawn.  Two deer, male and female, walk along the shore leaving very recognizable prints in the sand as they head back into the brush of the dunes to escape the rising sun. Well spent research of finding the right places and right time, with patience and diligence lead to worthy photographic scenes to share.

The Blank Canvas https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/7/the-blank-canvas My Artist Statement:  Created by Jackie Stevens

The black thick texture of the paint creates a green, blue, or magenta hue when photographed in certain light. The deep engraved lines are the flow of water, the flow of signals, or what you interpret the remaining lines left to dry. Similar to white the color black, varies in shades and hues. The experimentation of purposeful yet loose abstracts are shown here in this depiction.

The experiment with black paint particularly one color, represents the inhibition to explore and express oneself with no judgement.

The definition of judgement; the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.  This series represents judgement, and the unconditional way the flow of paint appears on the surface.  It is unpredictable yet transforming to perform unique designs and shapes yet unseen.  This meditated abstract monochromatic print series is available in book form.  Please contact me for additional information to obtain a copy of this book.

One Million Photos-Podcast with the Artistic Labs! https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/3/one-million-photos-podcast-with-the-artistic-labs The year is 2013:  Lucky to be in the elevator with my camera, this is not about the off-white balance or the person in the photo. The moments were all too quick and all too fun.  Standing next to this person, everyone in the elevator couldn't remember who he was  I felt so tiny, so small, I came up to about his waist (exaggeration) he is 6'5"!! We had a great time joking around, remembering (yes, incredible) who he is, and reciting the many-many famous lines.  We had him laughing so hard....

But-this is not about the photo, or the person, it's about how I somehow reached to ONE MILLION PHOTOS taken (clicked) by me in the form of a camera, whether film, or digital, or a home made camera from a shoebox.  The total camera clicks equal to over a cool mil.  Each photo captured is in raw form and contains a lot of data to be stored.  This is a challenge, and will be shared on the next podcast called-ONE MILLION PHOTOS.

Drop of Light inside a Calla Lily https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/3/drop-of-light-inside-a-calla-lily Pink Calla Lily:

Though calla lilies are most commonly white, they actually grow in a variety of colors including pink, purple, yellow, and even black. Calla lily symbolism varies by flower color.

  • White calla lilies symbolize purity and innocence.
  • Pink calla lilies symbolize appreciation and admiration.
  • Purple calla lilies symbolize charm and passion.
  • Yellow calla lilies symbolize gratitude.

The calla lily was named after the Greek word for beautiful — calla. It is associated with the Greek goddess Hera. The most common meaning for calla lilies is purity, holiness, and faithfulness. It’s commonly depicted in images of the Virgin Mary. Calla lilies are also symbols for rebirth and resurrection, tied to the resurrection of Jesus in part because they bloom around Easter and in part because they are shaped like trumpets which symbolize triumph.

2019, Color of the Year, Living Coral https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/12/2019-color-of-the-year-living-coral The 2019, Pantone color of the year is Living Coral.  Living Coral represents brighter, with a softer edge. The challenge to incorporate coral into photographs is difficult. How does Pantone come to pick their Color of Year? Well, they write that "the selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis" and that their color experts "comb the world looking for new color influences."

From Pantone:

Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.

In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.

Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.

Welcome 2019 and Living Coral!  Photo taken; 2015, October Sunrise, North Shore, The Long Island Sound, Long Island, New York.

"We have technology because of the heavens."  Jackie Stevens

Why is Astronomy Important?

Astronomy and related fields are at the forefront of science and technology; answering fundamental questions and driving innovation. Although blue-skies research like astronomy rarely contributes directly with tangible outcomes on a short time scale, the pursuit of this research requires cutting-edge technology and methods that can on a longer time scale, through their broader application make a difference.

A wealth of examples show how the study of astronomy contributes to technology, economy and society by constantly pushing for instruments, processes and software that are beyond our current capabilities. In this essay we outline both the tangible and intangible reasons that astronomy is an important part of society. Although we have focused mainly on the technology and knowledge transfer, perhaps the most important contribution is still the fact that astronomy makes us aware of how we fit into the vast Universe.

Why Photography should be social? https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/6/why-photography-should-be-social November 2016 {After photography seminar}.

Having lunch with another photographer in NYC, the table next to us is a group of photographers, including a personal photographer of a famous celebrity.  After a quick conversation, lead to rearranging of chairs and tables as the six of us sit together and share our most challenging photo shoots, detailing the worse possible conditions.  As I listen, these stories include running from a bear, freezing rain locking the car doors (with equipment and clothes inside), recovering a camera from the bottom of a river amazingly dry in a ziploc bag, and a real runaway bride.  We laugh as the stories rotate from person to person.  In the span of three hours, no one reveals their cell phone, to share their photos or to check an urgent message.  The conversation remains fluid full of energy, passion, and respect for one another.

The professional photographers surrounding me use words describing their technical challenges, visualizing the clear image before us in our minds.  We revel of the pure modesty and gratefulness as professionals, we remain relevant.  We share information, exchange ideas, and instantly become a team.  We capture images, share in the delight of others with hopes to tell a story, an impact, to preserve, to remember, and to inspire.

Photo taken: June 2013.

Long Beach Life: 2012, 2013, 2018 before and after Hurricance Sandy https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/5/long-beach-life-2012-2013-2018-before-and-after-hurricance-sandy Hurricane Sandy was formed October 22, 2012 and dissipated November 2, 2012.  Sandy is the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane ($68.7 billion in damage).  I have visited Long Beach after this storm on a few occasions.  Many people inevitably questioned if I was from Newsday or a well known TV station, the answer was always no. As town residents and visitors, turned their heads sideways not sure why I was photographing. I kept a log of the journey of the boardwalk rebuilt located at Long Beach, New York.

The progress and newly built (2013) construction was a seamless endeavor, perfectly orchestrated, resulting in a welcoming connection of community and nature. Everyone who I spoke with were extremely generous with their time and provided many pieces of information, and displayed pride in their work.  All construction workers and community members were hugely anticipating the finished boardwalk.  As I was invited to the opening ceremony, many were glad to enjoy the connection once again. It is a simple reminder, of how lucky we are, as nature poured down and tour many things apart, the community came together. The efforts are reminded in the boardwalk visited by many today.

Nestled on the south shore this particular beach stretches 3.3 miles long and the newly rebuilt 2.2 mile boardwalk offers a variety of activities.  It is a stunning reminder of the beauty of Long Island and the diversity and cultures we share.  The full gallery is posted under 'Long Beach Life.'  More to come.....(scroll down for more photos). 2018, 2013, 2012.

Blue Heron Arrives https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/blue-heron-arrives Blue Herons are native to the North East region (in the United States), and are quiet hunters which build huge burrows and nests. One was lucky to cross my path, as she just finished eating a small fish she collected with her beak.  The drop of water that rested gently near its mouth, had fallen perfectly as the shutter released before cascading on the water.  The drop of water reflects her beautiful blue hue which is delicate and soft against her grey coloring and her clear bright yellow eye. Her pupil is focused down as she continues to search and hunt for small fish for dinner.  This is the first time I have captured a blue heron this close.  The occasion and opportunity is rare, as the heron was hunting I was capturing her.

Blue herons, this one here is about 3.5 feet tall and has a wingspan of about 6 feet.  They cruise between 20 to 30 miles per hour, and typically hunt alone.

The Artistic Lab Q&A Session with Jackie Stevens Part 3 | Light https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/the-artistic-lab-q-a-session-with-jackie-stevens AL:  Hello again, tell me more about your process of light and what it means to you when you photograph.

JS:  Many years ago learning photography at a very early age, it was all about composition.  It's important to understand composition and to be familiar why certain things work in a photograph, and why it doesn't.  Images need to be appealing to the eye. Your eyes needs to stay in the image and not wander off.  Today, light is my focal.  To master light is to master photography.

AL: How are you learning about light?  What can you share with us?

JS:  Light is all I see when photographing now.  Seeing where it falls and where it casts highlights and shadows are key.  Learning light calculations such as shadow length, time of day, angle between the sun and horizon, latitude and longitude all play an important role, in getting it right.  You may not have the tools available to perform such calculations; however, this comes with practice and time, planning a shoot around a certain time of day, you'll be able to improve your photography.

AL:  What tools do you use?

JS:  A Photographer's Ephemeris tool is great start in understanding more about the positioning and capturing of sunlight.  There are many apps available that are free or for purchase to learn more about sunlight.  Understanding tides, and phases of moons also helps.

AL: Do you use these tools now?

JS: After careful planning I sometime use spontaneous light (getting up early and grabbing the camera), while not thinking about light, is sometimes the best unplanned light in creating great photographs.  It's a balance of the two, there's never a perfect formula.  It begins with trial and error, and never really being 'done'.  As photographers, we are always learning and experimenting.  Photography should be a challenge, a lesson learned, and a technique that can be shared with others.

AL: What do you look for?

JS: How the light is casting shadows, where are the highlights?  Where are the best darks?  Where are the best lights?  Understanding how they all work together is part of the creative process.

AL: What do you think is best when capturing sunlight?

JS:  Lots of patience, photographers are sometimes quick to capture a photo and move on quickly, looking at the back of the LCD screen not satisfied, and moving on to another spot.

AL: What do you think is the best light?

JS: Sunrise, the best time of day and the softest light.

AL: What are you planning on next for light?

JS: Light painting seems like fun, I would like to learn more, and play with light at night.

AL: Seems like another great topic, thank you for your time.  Always a pleasure to catch up.

JS: My pleasure.

The Artistic Lab Q&A Session with Jackie Stevens https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/6/the-artistic-lab-q-a-session-with-jackie-stevens Your newest additions to the Alternative Collection are receiving attention.

A: Can you tell us: Where does the inspiration come from for this collection?

J: I was showing my artwork to a friend at a Gallery reception, it was said, "You should try Art."  That came to no surprise, as I consider my artwork as Fine Art Photography.  Traditional photography was becoming too traditional. People come into my life at amazing moments, and have strongly influenced me in a positive light.  I am grateful for this.  I was able to see a person experimenting in a particular medium which appeared to be their first time; there was evidence of uninhibited creation filled with risks.  I was drawn to that, and started experimenting in that fashion.  I paid attention to chemicals and lifting of transparencies adhering to film and final prints.  The process was repeated several times, and the results are never the same.

A: Do you use Photoshop to manipulate these images?

J: Yes, yet I feel it is not necessary to use it all the time, less is more where images themselves become Art.

A: What is the piece called?  What is it?

J: This piece is called Goldfish, there is only one Goldfish in the image, can you spot it?

A: I think so, is that it?  What are you planning to do with these images?

J: Continue on my journey to be inspired, and make art.  These images would be best displayed on acrylic.  Upon closing this body of work, I may select a few images and print on acrylic.

A: Can I have one?

J: Of course!

Take Me Home - Posing Pooch https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/6/take-me-home---posing-pooch Dogs on the beach, always seem to find me when they just shake off the ocean water.  This is usually followed by intense curiosity by leaning up against me, or dropping the ball right next to me.  This dog is tired from running back and forth into the water, and is taking a short rest right in front of me. It's really early in day, the dog puts his head down, and closes his eyes for a minute, and then jumps right up again.  It's the quick short sweet moments, that is special to me in every way.  Glad to share this with you.

All my best,

Wooden Plank-The New Alternative Collection https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/wooden-plank-the-new-alternative-collection Wooden Plank-my newest edition to the Alternative Collection, is inspiration from the hundreds of artists that bring joy to my life.

My inspiration comes in many different forms and from many different places.  Here the flooring on an old ship, shipwrecked underwater, raised from the sea, leaves deep grooves, patterns of salt, plant life, and history undone. Wavering through rough seas, and unforgiving winds, a storm collides against a warm current ripping the large sails, recklessly spinning the old ship.  The vessel is tossed from side to side taking in too much water, giving way to the grasp of the unforgiving storm.  The ship sinks quickly as timber wood is heard snapping like soft twigs in the wind. The vessel is gone and is seen momentarily peering beneath the muscular surface, before crashing to the sea floor. Nearly one hundred years later, the ship is found, treasures are located, and stories re-told.  The wooden planks are linear with deep groves, with no seams detected.  The length of these planks are impressive, each one if sanded down will reveal its inner beauty.  Their color, their story, the footsteps, their life.

This is my inspiration.

The Alternative Collection was NOT created with the use of a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera.

Two Lips First Kiss, April 1, 2016 Artist Show Long Island, New York (Selected Artist) https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/two-lips-first-kiss-april-1-2016-artist-show-long-island-new-york-selected-artist My Artist Statement, Art Exhibit:

I spend countless enjoyable hours on the facets of digital photography, and the aspect of creating Fine Art with my camera.  My idea of the First Kiss concept photo and the passion behind it resulted in using a microscope with a high intensity light.  The corner of the rose was placed in a small glass dish on its side.  The digital camera was connected to the microscope using many different attachments.  The view and composition I had created in my mind was only visible tethering (connecting) the camera to a laptop so I could see through the lens and positioning the rose just right without moving the camera.  After many attempts, I created the sincerity and warm sensation of the First Kiss.  Where nothing around it mattered, and the focus and intensity did not even allow of slither of light to enter between the two petals of the rose.

My work is of experimental photography pushing the boundaries and taking risks to create work that has never seen before.  Art in which, you may not realize what it is, as you are drawn to the piece of curiosity and interest, your eyes become transfixed and hopefully smile as you draw in closer.  After careful inspection to see that it is a Rose, Kissing for the First Time.

Being Present at 10,000 feet above Sea Level https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/10/being-present-at-10-000-feet-above-sea-level There are times where the moment overcomes you.  Being present, is singularly an inner personal desire to connect to where you are.  Here, I hear nothing, it is silent and moving.  I see clear down the valley, past the immense slice through Earth, all so delicate and timeless.

Your Best Critic-My Favorite Photo https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/10/your-best-critic-my-favorite-photo Editing and selecting your own work is difficult.  Some photographers edit right away, while others let the images brew in the pot for a while.  You can't be biased, you need to step back and view your work as not your own.  This trait is challenging and rewarding at the same time.  Reviewing images and selecting the top 25, reduce to 10, reduce to 5, and select 1 is a process.  My best image for 2015 is one in which is difficult to sum up in words. Cataloging photos as Best; and to conclude the photo for this year is premature, yet I am excited about it.  It's because you wait and want the best image possible, so many factors are at stake.  You get the shot, and say nothing, and wait some more, until someone else sees it, and you hear the same response again and again.  You feel validated, yet you knew when you first saw the image, it was the one.  You release the shutter and let the brilliance fill the room.

Montauk to Manhattan at 5:00am https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/10/montauk-to-manhattan-at-5-00am It's 5:00am, the whole town is sleeping.  The best photographs are when you can hear the water all the way across reaching the other shore.  My senses are alert and the wildlife is vibrant and strong.  The Sound is rippling and I can see the bottom clear across.  I am photographing and someone is watching nearby, wondering what the photograph will look like.  I can taste it, waiting patiently and how incredible this place really is.  I don't want to leave, but the sun is rising fast, and a new day has begun.

Saved by Water https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/9/saved-by-water

Saved by Water, many times, many years, many lives.  Here, I am in the water, photographing what I feel around me, underneath are not thousands but millions of kelies all healthy and fast.  I see them everywhere, but mostly on the North side.  When I swim, they normally go underneath, but now they swim around me, forming an infiniti shape all around me.  They are fast and serve an amazing purpose all as one.  It is almost night, and they are reaching their destination.  It is time to go home.

New Project: Social Media Mania https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/7/new-project-social-media-mania Social Media Mania isn't hard to find or hard to photograph.  In fact, I enjoy it.  I enjoy watching everyone's reactions, pressing seamless buttons, seeing their work before them on the device used instantaneously.  It is somehow magical for that split second, and then quickly forgotten.  No one knows what the future holds regarding these devices and new technology.

A friend's relative had recently passed away at 92, what an incredible journey to see so many things evolve and people evolve during that time span.  Babies or infants today, who may live to that age, will see the year 2107 or longer; something to think about.  As often as I do, meaning time, people, and journeys.  My legacy is this; to capture history and preserve moments for a very long time.  This is now, so enjoy it.  Caption:  Time Stands Still.

All my best,

Jackie

Lureness Castle - Worth Repeating https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/3/lureness-castle---worth-repeating Walking Back in Time I found this Castle.  This Castle actually found me, I looked up and there it was.  The location is undisclosed, and a beautiful site with a sad ending.  This castle was to be home of three individuals; a mother, a father, and their little girl.  A series of events lead to a turn of plans.  Close to 100 years later this castle was never occupied.  Not a single residence has lived in this massive place.  It is here, where its great majestic structure is amiss a series of large pine trees and a hidden entrance, waiting for someone to enter.  In this case, the castle is preserved, abandoned, but saved by a photographer, and the willingness of adventure and wonderment.

Enjoy,

Jackie

Having a Great Sense of Humor is the ability to laugh at yourself and laugh with others, when everything doesn't seem to be the way you want it to turn out, its best to smile.  Trying to get it (the moment of great photography) just right, is challenging and difficult, sharing moments and great places with other photographers alike the photographs all remain different and unique.  Here, the moment of accomplishment here is finishing as we are all so loud cheering, YOU DID IT, YOU DID IT!!! (safely and cleanly with our camera equipment).  As we put our photography equipment away safely, we were all tossed into the mud one by one.  There was mud in the car for weeks.

8 Attributes That Make A Great Photographer https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/10/8-attributes-that-make-a-great-photographer #1-Integrity

Photographers are crazy about photography.  Photographers live, eat, and breathe photography, and will go to great lengths to learn something new, or to try something new.  We research everything, continuously look for that better shot, and seem to search for the best mix to make it all come together seamless.  I am always interested in what photographers are doing now, and find it interesting some revert back to their past, as how they obtained their first camera.  As this is all very important, and shaped our futures in photography, it is equally important to what we are doing now to grow, develop, and to support one another.

Attributes That Make a Great Photographer:

Number 1.

Integrity:  A photographer called me and told me this story.  In the middle of a photo shoot, a photographers shutter broke on his camera, he had no back-up camera.  Another photographer at the same shoot, noticed this, and offered to drive home to get a back up camera for this person.  He just jumped in his car, went to get the extra camera, and handed it to the guy with the look of desperation and despair.  Suddenly, he was relieved and so appreciative of this moment, and told everyone about it.  We were simply happy he turned a unfortunate event to a positive one for someone in need of help.   When we talk about this photography event, this is what we remember of that day, this is what we talk about.

Next Post:  Attribute Number 2.

I miss Utah https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/9/i-miss-utah There is no words to describe Utah, particularly the National Parks.  I think about the incredible views often, and the amazing people I have met there.  A quiet place with so much beauty around it.  The striking views are breathtaking and simply leaves me in awe as these majestic landscapes surround me.  The National Parks are always changing with the light, with the seasons, a landscape can change rapidly, as I went back sometimes three times a day.  I miss everything about it, and will more than likely return back in Winter.

My First Real Documentary Project https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/my-first-real-documentary-project I'm ready.

I'm ready to photograph my first documentary project.  This has been on my mind for quite some time.  I have been inspired by young artists where I was fortunate to be surrounded by last Spring.  Young artists or Generation Y, take on multiple risks and creativity comes to them in many different forms.  I have been truly inspired by these young and talented artists.  I have given this project much thought, and put together a small list to get started on my exciting new journey.

1.  Get Permission:  My subject matter will be unusual and different for me.  There are associated challenges; obtaining permission along with access will need to granted along helping those to understand what I am trying to achieve.

2.  Staying Organized.  Printing several hundred photos and editing consistently with multiple tools.

3.  Deadlines.  This is a personal project dear to me, setting realistic deadlines will make this happen.  Goal setting will be key, hoping not to let this project fall to the side-continue to pursue.

4.  Why? To tell a story of importance, to document and record for future generations and those current.

An Artist Reveals the #1 Abandoned Location https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/ghost-town-an-abandoned-town It's above 100 degrees and walking through the small town in Utah.  A great local artist asked me what I like to photograph, and kindly recommended a great place to go about 100 miles away in the middle of nowhere.  A town left where brave men and women lived to make a life and a future for their children.  A not so simple life, hard, and unforgiving in the middle of the desert. Oil was drilled, and freight cars pulled in slowly in the middle of the night.  A woman who lived here, drove her daughter to town every day one hour each way to ensure her child received an education.  There was no running water in this town, and a post office the size of a small bathroom.  One of the last residents left about four to five years ago.  This place had feelings, emotions, life and soul, this gem was called home.

My Biggest Risk https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/my-biggest-risk Today, friends and colleagues talked about risk.  What is the biggest risk you took?  What was it?  Why did you take it?

Risk involves the unknown, uncertainty, with a hint of excitement.  Sometimes, we take many risks at the same time, which sometimes leads to great outcomes.  Consensus of the group says, the bigger the risk, the greater the success and the greater the challenge.  Risk can be scary, but without it, where would we be.  A lot of great conversation, reflection, and potential risk lies ahead for many.

The photo below has been to date, the most challenging and came with great risk.  I was petrified taking this photo, given the location, the uncertainty, and the overall heightened excitement.  To date, this photo has been my most successful photo to date, as I categorize success, which lead to many great opportunities.  The delicateness of the paint peeling appearing like butterflies or small cocoons waiting to hatch in this small corner-was momentous for me.  This place is very special to me, and glad I took the risk in capturing this photograph.

This is My Backyard https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/this-is-my-backyard Well, not really, but glad I got your attention.  This location is only 4.5 miles away from my house.  As I am planning an extensive photography travel vacation across 7 to 8 states, this photograph gave me a few thoughts.  I always come back to my favorite photographs that were taken within a very close radius of my home.  This photograph was taken in mid-Winter (2013) with very high winds. I waited very patiently, close to an hour to get this shot.  The inspiration was to capture light similar to paintings.  Paint the photograph with light and the color will come.  I had two pairs of gloves on.  I was quick enough to take the gloves off and take this shot, just as the sun peeked thru for just a moment, and went back behind the clouds to turn all the color to grey and white mid tones.  I am hoping to capture more great moments on my travels across the country soon.  I can't wait to meet new people, and see the beauty they see everyday in their backyard.

All my best,

Jackie Stevens

Inspiration from a Medium Format Camera https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/inspiration-from-a-medium-format-camera Contrary, this photograph was not taken with a Medium Format Camera.

These cowboys in Manhattan were captured with my sturdy Canon Rebel my first Digital camera with a Prime lens.

The inspiration comes from a fellow photographer from China using a Medium Format camera.  After careful thought the Canon Rebel with the Prime lens was the closest and challenging representing the Medium Format, on a clear a perfect night.  Thousands of people gathered from all of the over world, speaking different languages, with different cultures, all enjoying the sights and sounds of stunning Times Square, New York City.

Enjoy.

All my best,

Applying Bronzer https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/applying-bronzer It's been a long winter, the snow seems like a distant memory.  The warm weather is an exciting time for photographers, although photographing all year long is just as fun and challenging at the same time.  I encourage everyone to photograph daily. The saying practice makes perfect has some truth to it.  Photographing on a regular basis gets you familiar with your equipment, in any weather.  You begin to feel comfortable with the various settings.  Photographing with friends is also fun, asking a friend out or meeting new people is another great way to learn.  Your friend will be glad you contacted them to photograph.  Wear sunscreen, bring water and snacks, a comfortable planned out day with friends leads to great memories, some good laughs, with hopes of getting that great shot.

Have fun,

Jackie Stevens

Undisclosed Abandoned - The Ultimate Connection https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/undisclosed-abandoned---the-ultimate-connection Urban explorers of abandoned buildings like myself feel it necessary to not identify the exact location of their find.  Protecting the location for further ruin, overall safety, and privacy for the owners property.  These treasurers of decay bring upon respect of the people who were once here, and spent their lives living here.  Finds like these preserve the inner beauty, appreciation of the actual structures, and feelings of despair and lost hope, that is created in my artwork.  The feelings I evoke are strong, as I am connected to these very special places.  Here this photograph drew me and stopped me from raising my camera, as I normally would when creating a moment.

There is a deep inner connection that goes into these photographs, that cannot be taught, repeated, or in some cases understood.  I have visited many challenging abandoned locations, which includes, patience, determination and the deep passion I have for photography and particular abandoned structures that will soon find their place onto destruction to make way for new.  These unwanted structures or in rare cases protected and preserved, places kept frozen in time, to reflect on progress, or lack of from ignorance.  These buildings are deep felt, I'm fortunate to be a part of this personal project to preserve and continue on their legacy whether gone or taken on another found awakening.

Undisclosed location.

Lincoln Memorial - 2nd Post https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/lincoln-memorial---2nd-post The Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the National Mall as a neoclassical monument to the 16th President. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon, after ancient Greek temples, stands 190 feet long, 119 feet wide, and almost 100 feet high. It is surrounded by a peristyle of 36 fluted Doric columns, one for each of the thirty six states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death, and two columns in-antis at the entrance behind the colonnade. The north and south side chambers contain carved inscriptions of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. Lying between the north and south chambers is the central hall containing the solitary figure of Lincoln sitting in contemplation. The statue was carved in four years by the Piccirilli brothers under the supervision of the sculptor, Daniel Chester French. The statue of Lincoln is 19 feet high and weighs 175 tons. The original plan was for the statue to be only ten feet high, but this was changed so that the figure of Lincoln would not be dwarfed by the size of the chamber. A commission to plan a monument was first proposed in 1867, shortly after Lincoln's death. The design for that plan called for six equestrian and 31 pedestrian statues of colossal size, with a 12-foot statue of Lincoln in the center. That project was never started for lack of funds. Congress approved the bill to construct this memorial in 1910. Construction began in 1914, and the memorial was opened to the public in 1922. The Memorial is visited by millions of visitors each year and is the site of many large public gatherings and protests.

My Favorite Topic https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/3/my-favorite-topic Digital Photography - Abandoned Buildings - Me

About three years ago, at a restaurant a group of photographers and I had dinner together.  One photographer had asked me, what do you photograph?  {Or in common lingo, what do you shoot?}  I haven't really thought about it, film was versatile to me.  I photographed people, landscapes, and abstract art for close to twenty years.  I had switched to digital reluctantly, and the learning curve was steep.

At that time, my focus was on film and digital photography was something I would never venture to.  All the controls, all the training, all the practice, had been within the camera, with no LCD screen to check your work.  Transitioning to digital felt like cheating, it was too easy, all the same controls existed, but this time, I had instant results and a ton of film.  I mean too much virtual film.  It didn't feel right.

My first digital camera, I had intentionally photographed only 24 to 36 frames.  This idea, was simply impossible.  Digital photography and the art of photography combined is forever evolving.  Over time with improved technology, creativity is limitless.  With patience, determination, and an open mind, digital photography had adopted me.  It fit me.  So now, when someone asks me what do I photograph, I don't pause, I don't ponder.  I photograph abandoned buildings with a digital camera.  This is my favorite topic.

The Bronx - Circa 2012 - "Get the Car" https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/3/the-bronx---circa-2012 October 2012 - Bronx, NY.

Walking in the Bronx with my camera is always fun.  People are always curious, ask questions, and wondering why I am there.  I have been there several times, especially Arthur Avenue.  You know this is a great place to eat when all the New York City fire trucks pull up, and the firemen grab their favorite lunch on queue.

Behind me here, is a well attended restaurant.  Everyone is watching me, as I pass the car, to my left, cross the street to get to the other side.  Everyone sees me, and starts banging on the windows of the restaurant as I am just about to raise my camera to get this shot.  The restaurant owner dressed in a pressed shirt and pants, and the waiter all in white, and two patrons sitting down with white linen napkins tucked in their shirts are shouting and pointing, "Get the car, look, get the car!"  I raised the camera, as they instructed me to do, and they all nod their heads approving.  I smile, laugh, thank them, and continue on my way.

What I See https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/3/what-i-see This is the basement, part of concrete molding from a section above tore through this section ripping the rebar inside the above floor along with it.

The terra cotta tile dangling above is a piece from the roof above.  That particular piece traveled over 200 feet and landed in a web of tangled rebar.  The rebar is encased in the concrete pulling down.  {Rebar is a common steel bar or mesh of steel wires commonly used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures, to strengthen and hold the concrete in compression. The surface of the rebar may be patterned to form a better bond with the concrete}.

The sound of this sudden decaying moment was deafening.  Although it wasn't heard, one can only imagine, the amount of skill (welders) to put the maze of rebar together.  Certain countries will reuse the rebar, and sold for its worth in weight as scrap.

24,652 Photos, 343 Days, 2 Cameras, & 509,612 Incredible People: My Story https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/9/24-652-photos-343-days-2-cameras-509-612-incredible-people-my-story This is my Story:  One year ago, this is where it all started, at a soccer tournament with another new camera.  This time its a newly purchased Canon Rebel T3i, a digital camera that fit me well.  Between soccer games, I wandered around, asking people to have their photograph taken, and I was pleasantly enlightened that answer was always, Yes.  After this experience, I got in the car with no destination.  There were many wrong turns and ultimately getting lost.  I pulled over checking a map (yes, a map, not a GPS).  I was in the middle of the property of Kings Park Psychiatric Center.  I looked up at the striking building that cast a huge shadow, and was in amazement.  I got out of my car, fearless and curious, and started photographing, where the silence is of pure abandonment.  I was completely hooked with all the new sights before me.  Photography became a way of exploration, pursuing my passion, while making friends along the way.  Sharing, laughing, with uninhibited exploration.  My journey has been incredible and as there is no end, it is just the beginning.  This web site has been not only a way of expression and displaying photographs, but to to share it with others to enjoy while telling my stories along the way.   I have photographed this year alone, (which marks many years of photography), 24,652 photographs, approximately over 343 days and counting, with two amazing loyal cameras: Canon 6D, and Canon Rebel T3i, and over the course of this year so far, I have met so many amazing people, they are always there; waiting for me, as I am waiting for them to explore and continue this journey.

I Don't See Any https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/9/wheres-your-ink-i-don-t-see-any I met the most incredible tattoo artists.  They are born with this amazing talent.  Each artist was their own unique style, and is different from the next.  I admire their determination and devotion to this particular form of expression.  I admire their sincerity and candor, and welcoming me in to share their world.

How a Building Becomes Abandoned https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/9/how-a-building-becomes-abandoned This particular building was a famous restaurant.  Two bodies of water joined together squeezing this building from either side-creating an unforgiving water table.  Here, food was stored in the basement in this large building.  A row boat was used in the basement to secure items and quickly abandoned after several attempts to save it.  Blue outdoor carpet is still seen leading up the stairs, where valet parking was available.

Double Throw https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/8/double-throw I have known Guy Wolff for over 25 years.  He continues to make beautiful garden pots in his CT workshop.  He has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Martha Stewart, and Oprah.  Several turns on Country Roads with a small sign in front of his house that says, Guy Wolff Pottery made me stop right away.  I met him in front of his house, we had some laughs, and because it was late in the day-I promised him I would return after he wakes up the next day.

He said I wake up at 10:00am so come back at 11:00am, so I did.  I couldn't believe it was him.  I asked him all about his TV debut and of course the pottery.  The morning started off with him turning on the kilns, checking the temperature and humidity of the workshop, and changing into this pottery clothes.  He started making a bell pot which requires a Double Throw, two large pieces of clay incredibly yielded together by the talent and careful skill of Guy.  The pot was completed in about 12 minutes, and cautiously transported to the drying station.   The entire process was so interesting and I was so glad to have the opportunity to spend time with him in his pottery workshop.  What a treat.

He says, "I have to tell you my story." https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/7/he-says-i-have-to-tell-you-my-story Today, its approximately 90 degrees at KPPC and I'm starring at Building 93 wondering how hot all the patients must have been.  The Long Island sound is shimmering from this high point clear across the horizon below.  While most rooms in 93 face the water, I painfully wonder if any of the patients dreamt about the water or swimming to cool off.  As a constant reminder the majestic 93 towers over this beautiful site, where the sky meets the water, and continues far away.

A man approaches me and says, "I haven't seen you here."  We talk for some time.  I learned all about his life, and incredible details of KPPC.  We walk from building to building showing me all his favorite spots.  He explains the daunting history attached to each one, including those buildings gone.  There is much history here, including a farm, stable, shoemaker building, wood shop, and buried train tracks, all of which he showed me.  I have walked over these train tracks many times, and have never noticed them.  He never stops talking.

We also talked about photography for some time.  There were many questions of piqued interest.  I explained as best I could the borrowed Infrared camera I had with me.  I showed him the shots I had taken, there were wow's.

Then we stopped in the shade, overlooking the Coal building, and he turned to me and said, "I have to tell you a story."

He said, "Do you believe that things happen for a reason?  Or being at the right place at the right time?  Do you believe in destiny?"

His Story:

He grew up in Northport, NY, and one day his family decided to go fishing on the dock.  A photographer approached his father and explained he was taking photographs to be later printed on Post Cards of Long Island.  The photos were taken, and the photographer mailed a couple dozen of these Post Cards to the family.  His parents recently passed away, and the Post Cards were no longer to be found.  A few months after their passing he went to a Tag Sale (on Long Island), and pulled out a $5 bill to purchase the same Post Card that was postmarked in Minnesota, inscribed on the back, "Having a Great Vacation on Long Island."  He wrote this story attached it carefully to the Post Card and put it in a safe for his children.

Below is a photo I had taken along our journey, including a photograph of my new friend.  As we were both walking briskly-this is what I got.

7 1/2 Minute Chukker https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/6/7-1/2-minute-chukker Can you use the same horse for an entire game?

No.  Polo ponies run the equivalent of one to two miles during a seven-and-a-half-minute chukker, so they must be rested frequently.  At the high-goal level, players ideally will have a fresh horse every period although many will double on their best ponies.  Even at this level, it’s rare but not unheard of for a pony to be played three chukkers in the same game—it happened in the famed International Matches between England and the United States.

Can anyone tell me if this is Nacho below?  If so, then this is really a great photo, because of Nacho.

Polo Match https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/6/polo-match These are the best photos of the day (see the three photos below).  I enjoy listening to the players talk to one another during the match.  I am lying on the ground watching them play, and listening very closely.  The horses and players are inches away from each other and never bump into each other.  They stop and turn with ease and speed, and the horses know to go after the ball.

Camera, Culture, and Kindness https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/6/camera-culture-and-kindness I am always intrigued and fascinated with every culture.  Especially cultures I know nothing about.  Their language, their customs, their idea of thinking, their kindness, and willingness to open up to someone and share their stories.  Here I am snapping away, and he is gesturing for me to come over to play his instrument.  I carefully play the instrument with extreme ease, and he laughs.  It is so simple and yet the sound is so distinct.  I ask many questions, and he cannot speak my language.  I cannot speak his language, we can't understand each other, so we laugh some more.  He plays a song for me, and now we understand each other perfectly. {See two photos below}.

The Star and the Snip https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/5/the-star-and-the-snip This is Watermark-the name of this horse.  He has a distinguished marking on its Star.

The Star is a marking located on the top of the horse's head, and the Snip is a marking located near the nose.

I learned this today, from his owner.  Watermark has an irregular Star and it is quite unique.

History & Photography https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/5/historyandphotography Today was a little too easy.  Meaning photography; the set up, the plan, the tactic, and the results.  I researched WWII and photography a great deal.  My full intention for this collection was to shoot in black and white only.  Listen to the stories, as there were many, learn from them, and then the photography will come.  As this happened, I leaned in closer, and asked for photos so many were delighted-as I felt this opportunity comes around not so often.  I admired the pure appreciation and dedication in keeping history alive.  There was a certain feel to this time and era, that will never be repeated, and held so close to so many people.  Do you know what it is?

My Photography Formula: Urban Risk Archaeology + 3 Lucky Charms = Amazing Find https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/5/3-lucky-charms-amazing-find Some like golf, the beach, gardening, and then there is this.

Something told me to carry or wear charms of luck that is significant to me today when photographing.  I wore three lucky charms and found this below.  When I started photographing seriously with digital in September 2012, someone had asked me what I like to photograph.  He asked, "What do you photograph?  What is your specialty?"  I didn't find or have an answer at that time.  His wife also explained to him, that I was exploring and learning digital photography, and finding my way.  My answer now, is two genres in order of preference: 1. Urban Risk Archaeology 2. People-Strangers

The neologism {a newly coined term created by me that has not yet been accepted into mainstream language} describing my photography specialty or genre is what I call:  Urban Risk Archaeology.

Urban Risk Archaeology:  Definition:  Photographing abandoned property, buildings, or sites, that were in high usage and of special interest at the time before abandonment and generally have a risk associated with photographing these sites.  This term came to me while I was lying on the loading dock reading the Census book from 1990 that I found. This Census book was in perfect condition, exactly 23 years old, and completely dry and unsoiled.  Pencil and pen marks checking off the residents status was clear as if it was completed yesterday.  I closed the book (yes, left it in the same position) in disbelief.  I forgot that I was even there while reading it, when the sound of thunder reminded me where I was.

1,000 Apples https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/5/1-000-apples The Kings Park Psychiatric Center Quad consists of four buildings which all appear to be connected.  Buidling 41, 42, 43, and 44. The hexagon piers are known as the solariums where patients would sun.  There are four of them strategically placed in the direction of the sun's path.  Two young men approached me in the back, and asked me if I was going in-I said, no, I am too scared.  They both said, we are scared too.  I asked them if they smell apples, as if there are 1,000 of apples everywhere in bushels and in crates.  They said yes.  I didn't see any apple trees. Lucky in Love with Photography & People https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/lucky-in-love-with-photography Sometimes, I get lucky, and generally, most people are very receptive and open, when I ask to take their photo.  I haven't been told no yet.  This is what happens, when you don't even have to ask, ponder, or wonder, it just naturally happens. You have to really be ready. Fortunately, I recognized this opportunity, but it was this man that created this photo and feeling, on his own. I was there at the right time to capture this moment.

York Hall Building - 80 Kings Park Psychiatric Center https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/york-hall---building-80-kings-park-psychiatric-center York Hall, Building 80, is easy to miss, one of the nicest buildings, and sits quietly to the left of the entrance of Nissequogue State Park.

This building is a theatre with seats located in the balcony.  Plays, performances, religious events, and meetings were held here.  This building is completely sealed off with cement on the front two windows opposite the main entrance, which I have not seen on any other building.

Wisteria Building - 15 Kings Park Psychiatric Center https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/wisteria-building---15 Constructed in 1939, this building is called Wisteria, number 15.  It sits next to 93 to its right.  Although, I have not seen Wisteria around the surrounding area-this building appears to be the most overgrown with brush and vines.  The name of this building is unknown, and this is the loudest building, the Surgical remains the one with the most sounds.  There is a small basketball court in the back, with two decorative exits, and a large kitchen area on the left.  There are several rumors regarding this particular building, all of which remain as rumors.

Macy Building - 90 Kings Park Psychiatric Center https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/macy-building-90---built-1917 Dr. William A. Macy Superintendent 1904 - 1918

In my opinion, this is the quietest building, it is still, it doesn't move or breathe.  Built in 1917, It sits across the street from Building 93. From 90, 93 looks spectacular.  This building (90) doesn't feel right, it's not placed right.  However, as the sun was setting through the broken glass on the second floor I went in the back and caught an orange glow from the sun illuminating the interior.  I left immediately after the sun went down on building 90.

Kings Park Psychiatric Center - Jody https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/kings-park-psychiatric-center---jody Jody and I did not go into any buildings.  She shared some very interesting stories, before the sun finally set.  What a treat.

Her favorite building is 93, where we both went to afterwards.  My favorite building (and the building with the most sounds) is this one, the Surgical Building.  I thought it was very interesting that all four photographers never walked in the street.  We all avoided it for whatever reason, we stayed on the sidewalks or walked on the grass.  Although all these buildings are abandoned, we all stayed close to the buildings.

The Long City by the Beach that could https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/the-long-city-by-the-beach-that-could After several months since Hurricane Sandy, Long Beach, NY looks great.  I have not seen most of the damage, but the recovery is well underway, the beach is clean, the town is ready, and the water is so clear.  Several surfers were out, and a recommended restaurant was closed due to Private Party, everyone was out and about, and construction for the new boardwalk will start soon.  The new boardwalk will be made of a hardwood tropical wood and the phased approach will be implemented.  Sections of the boardwalk will open one at a time.  Plans and dates are difficult to estimate-but everyone remains hopeful and excited about the Summer ahead.

Kings Park Psychiatric Center - Week Four - Jody https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/kings-park-psychiatric-center---week-four---jody I met three other photographers on April 13, 2013 in the late afternoon at the Kings Park Psychiatric Center, which was not planned.

Glen, discovered this place recently, this was his seventh visit.

Scott and Son, second visit.

Jody, unknown visit.

Jackie, me, fourth visit.

Jody and I are were near my favorite building, the Surgical Building.  I came up behind her and told her I'm there.  She says, I know I was watching you by the Surgical building.  I say to her, "Have you ever gone in?" She says lots of times.  I said, "Really, I never went in.  I'm too scared, and afraid I would get lost in the buildings."  She said, "I know my way around almost every building." She begins to rattle off all the buildings names and numbers accurately.  She said, "You know if we go in, I can show you how to get out, its not that hard."  I reply, "When were you inside last?" She says, "Not in while, but I remember a lot from when I worked here from 1981 to 1996."  I said, "Jody, you need to cancel all your important plans that might occur in the next hour.  Whether its picking someone up at the airport, making dinner, or a critical appointment, everything as you know it, is cancelled for the next hour."

You Can't Smile https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/you-cant-smile Here's the story:

10 construction workers hanging around-The only one not wearing a hood or a baseball cap was this one.  He was watching me climbing over the man made dune placed in front of the missing board walk.  I asked him if I can take his photo, he asked me if it will be in the paper.  I said, "Buddy, probably not," and I explained why.  He was smiling like a ham, loving every minute of it.  I said, this is the only time in a thousand times, I'm going to have to ask you not to smile.  He said, "What?" I said, "Who's sunglasses are those?" I said, "Listen Brian, today you are like Bob the Builder, but Brian the cool construction surveyor dude; building an awesome boardwalk worth $40 million dollars, where thousands of people will enjoy."  He said, "My name is not Brian, it's Mike, and that's what I'm DOING."  I said, "Yeah Brian, than look like it."  And this is what I got.....he loved it.

A Photographers Dream - Soaking Wet https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/a-photographers-dream---soaking-wet As a photographer, and to be surrounded by other amazing photographers...being tapped on the shoulder, to say, come with me, let me show you my culture, let me show you my family, let me show you my song and dance, is a blessing...As I knew about this Holiday, I was very excited to go, and didn't know what to expect.  I met with the NYPD and they estimated due to the weather, 50,000 were in attendance.....I met beautiful families and heard amazing stories, and had so much fun, my stomach hurt from laughing so much.  I was covered in chalk and soaking wet later on--after being attacked by 6 year olds from this awesome family.  I let them have fun with me, I couldn't resist.  Thank you so much for connecting with me, and letting me in to meet your families, your friends, and truly appreciating this beautiful Holiday. Happy Holi everyone.

Week One:  Building 93 and Doctors House?

The largest of all buildings has 11 floors, an attic, and a basement totaling 13 floors.  The rooms inside get smaller intentionally for less mobile patients the higher the floor.  The building seems to taper off towards the top, which may be an optical illusion or the design.  This building is perfect and spectacular to see.  Each window has 7 levels of glass, or rows, and 6 panes high.  The building sits perfectly positioned with the sunrise and set on an angle on purpose.  I was completed awestruck to this particular building and surrounding structures.  This particular photography project will be over the course of 13 weeks, capturing all the details of each structure.  There has been plans to tear these buildings down, but for now that has been placed on hold.  These buildings should never be entered, as they are completely unsafe and loaded with asbestos.

The Story:

The Visit:  My first visit was about an hour, it had just snowed and was windy, there was one other person walking around.  I drove around the back towards the section of buildings near the fire station.  I came upon a road and drove down-I stayed long enough for a security guard to approach.  He knew I was not in the buildings, as he was watching me closely.  I left on my own accord.

The Knee:  I counted my steps from the top of the stairs to the edge of the grass, 13.

I was being watched from inside Building 93.

Challenging Photographs https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/challenging-photographs Ahead of time, I researched the Rules and Regulations of photography at the NY Public Library.  There is no flash photography allowed, no tripods, and most of the Research rooms are completely off limits to photographers.  One of the Research rooms, is directly behind me in this photo, which two photographers were ushered out.  There are even clearly posted signs throughout these rooms.  They are standing right next to me, watching me setting up this scene, and in the middle of it, they drop a filter which echos across the entire room.  Right before that I am on my knees, taking this shot.

Here comes security, they address me, I say, "I never saw these two before in my life."  They other two photographers say, "She always says that."

Where is Trouble going? https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/where-is-trouble-going Emma requests Chicken Marsala and pancakes for dinner.  She quietly enters the kitchen and says, "Where is Trouble going?" Now, I look at her, and several thoughts cross my mind at once.  Did he open the window and jump out?  Does she mean he left?  As the look on her face is fairly calm, I remain calm, I still have the spoon in my hand, and Emma holds on to my apron as we quietly enter the bedroom.

Trouble managed to get himself inside the suitcase (on the floor), which is fairly large, the one I am donating.  This suitcase can pack two weeks of clothes, and more than likely not allowed on planes anymore.  So, there Trouble is, tail out, head out, huge paws off the side, cozy and snug inside my suitcase.  This is where he sleeps now. Emma thinks he wants to go on a trip.  Trouble looks at me and Emma and puts his head back down on the rug, we both shrug and go back to cooking.

Hide the Lion https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/hide-the-lion Last night, between baking cookies, playing with chalks, hopscotch, Old Maid, rainbow (princess) dust, and pasta necklaces.  Emma says to me, "Let's play Hide the Lion."  What?  Trouble is sleeping calmly because I took him around the track with Emma.  Later Emma gave up running, so its me, the rope attached to Trouble and Emma in the stroller.  Trouble is exhausted, luckily I am not.

Hide the Lion is where, you put Trouble underneath a blanket, he goes 'hides' and will growl if you can't find him.  Now, Trouble is the size of a twin bed and is as tall as a doorway, when on his back hind legs.  As I am so tempted to witness this game-I decide against it.  I still have visions of my camera flying around my neck landing next to me in the sand, as giant chewbacca tackles me (more about the cleaning of my camera).  Many have asked me, where is Trouble during the day?  Trouble goes to 'big dog' daycare, where he has the option of running around on three plus acres.  When I pick him up, he looks directly at me and Emma, and says-Game On.

Latest treats (but not chewed):  Barbie bus, claimed my blanket, and my suitcase.

I got Trouble https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/i-got-trouble Besides, me and Emma, I am babysitting Trouble-this is Trouble.  Why I agreed to do this is beyond me.  Trouble is larger than my car, and larger than life.  Trouble is huge and lays next to me at night on the floor-he won't 'allow' me to get in my bed (tons of barking and jumping).  I can't move at all, without Trouble putting his paws on my blanket.  Trouble's leash is a rope from a ship yard.  He takes me for a walk and will eat anything not tied down.  His list of treats so far are: my boots, my frying pan (the entire handle), two pillows, and a whole onion-don't even ask.  His 'stick' is a fireplace log-and oh by the way freaks out when I put my camera to my face to take his photo.  My face is always wet and we both sleep so well at night. So, no photos to be posted for just a few days.

Up to my Knees in Mud-well almost https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/up-to-my-knees-in-mud-well-almost For some reason, I can find a barn, stable, jockey room, horse corral, or ranch in two seconds (without directions).  This particular ranch was easy to find-the Arabian horse owner, directed me around the back to 'go' find Nick.  I clearly had my camera taking photos of Sundance his horse, and told me again, go in the back, hurry go see Nick-he is shoeing now.  Now, lets be clear I know nothing about horses.  So, at this point I think he is the horse shoe guy.  There's another barn-WAY in the back, where the black crows are calling, and a dog is following me, saying to himself, where are you going with your camera Ma'am.  So, I hear the metal, clanking and the loud grinding, so I go inside the barn, no one is there, even the horse is surprised to see me.

He says, Long Island has the most horses and barns, stables per square foot than any other state! He said, this is a fact, I say, I don't doubt you.  That's where his business is, that's where he grew up.  He doesn't even ask what I am doing with the camera, he just goes about his business and starts shoeing the horse, and I go about my business photographing this--I can't miss this, I can't lose any moments, but to focus on him and the horse.  After he is done shoeing, I tell him, I am done, he says, so am I.  And at that point, the horse turns around and sighs heavily.  This female horse got her first pair of shoes.

Nick

Coe Hall Grandchildren https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/2/coe-hall-grandchildren

Immediately I went to the left and not the right, the flow and layout of this mansion was perfect.  I cut across the lawn pass the frozen pool and garden further down.  I kept going not even interested in the pool, and the gated garden.  The arches of this portico and height of the covered area which lead to the formal dining room was brilliant.  The design was amazing, and it felt extremely safe, and warm in this outdoor area, even during WInter conditions-it was 26 degrees outside.  Luckily I found a photo of the Coe grandchildren, sitting at the same spot where I was.  I later learned this is where they played, this is where they came.  Now I know why.

I stopped 94 people in their tracks.... https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/2/i-stopped-94-people-in-their-tracks with this photo......After a 3' snow storm, with close to 4' in drifts.  I received close to 25-30 e-mails in an e-mail stream complaining about the lack of snow removal.  Thankfully everyone had power; stranded in their houses.  Every few seconds, another e-mail would alert me of an additional complaint.  It was the first day after the storm, and the sky was amazingly blue, even aqua at times.  So, I sent a responding e-mail to all 94 people:  I stated:  Greetings, We all live in a beautiful town.  I hope you don't mind if I send you these two photos-on this gorgeous day.  One is the photo below-and the other was a photo of icicles.  {These photos were in the most unusual places}.  From, Jackie.

And this was a response I received: Thanks Jackie, Just when I wanted to join in the complaining.

The e-mails stopped immediately.  Everyone enjoyed the photos.

Have you ever been Tagged? https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/2/have-you-ever-been-tagged I have not been tagged yet.  However, I haven't been to many 'hot spots'.  What does this mean?  Hot spots around here, are typically in NYC.  These hot spots have several security cameras and devices post 9/11.  These typical areas are highly congested such as; under bridges, near entry ways, tunnels, train stations, national landmarks, and tourist areas.  I was recently in Grand Central Terminal Station; this is designated as a hot spot.  I did not have a tripod-although they are allowed here with limited use, extended use requires a permit.  If I had a tripod today, I would have been tagged, more than likely.   There are many photographers in Grand Central Terminal, but with iPhones.  I have not been tagged by local officials-whereas, they do not want you to take numerous detailed photos of these structures.  This is understandable.  Using discretion, and letting people know in advance what I am doing helps me a lot.  Not in all cases, does this work.  However; today it did.

Funny Line | Printing Your Work https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/1/funny-line-printing-your-work Favorite Barn photo - Canon Print Challenge Printing photographs are equally important in addition to storing them digitally.

I heard someone recently say related to this topic.

This person's line was: "Print out your photos, your kids don't grow up on JPEG."

I really could't stop laughing....it was hilarious (to me).

My friend had 'assigned' me or rather challenged me to print a photo by Tuesday.

I printed the same photo; horse barn shot in two sizes (above), 4x6 and 8x10 on Monday.

The 8x10 was given to someone who really wanted it.  I'm left with the 4x6, brought

it to work, and someone else wanted it.  I'm now left with no prints, but was able to share my work,

which made me smile even more.

Things I Love https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/1/things-i-love I recently posted (quickly) about the discovery of HDR and how I taught myself how to do it.  Then I was thinking of what I really love as it relates specifically to photography.

What I love about photography so far:

1.  My tripod does its job.

2.  Digital 'film' will never stop fascinating me.

3.  Sharing my photographs.

4.  Making people smile and laugh.

5.  I am always learning and improving.

6.  I met some really neat friends.

7.  The smallest thing can make me happy.

8.  Discovering a new 'spot' is simply awesome.

9.  Wearing all black works for me.

10.  I so want to buy a horse now.

Photography & Me https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/1/photography-me I am never alone when it comes to photography.  It is more than a hobby now, but rather a passion, and drives me.  I dusted off and renewed this interest most recently.  The curiosity of people and openness is never expected, but always a pleasant awakening.  It's a small gift, I receive when I go out and photograph things I admire, and people that are more than interesting.  I don't find it intimidating and don't approach in that manner, when asking permission to take photos.  There are so many opportunities and places to visit, people to meet.  I find it interesting unlike other hobbies, exploring through the lens, has opened so many doors.

I have a new website to add: myshutterspace.com/profile/Jacqueline https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/12/i-have-a-new-website-to-add-myshutterspace-com/profile/jacqueline (Jackie Stevens Images) https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/12/i-have-a-new-website-to-add-myshutterspace-com/profile/jacqueline Tue, 25 Dec 2012 01:57:23 GMT JPEG vs. RAW https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/11/jpeg-vs-raw I shot RAW the other day, and not on purpose.  I normally shoot JPEG. What's the difference?  There are many articles on this topic-and this is what I learned from experience.  RAW is similar to an unprocessed negative.  JPEG is processed and has limitations on editing.  Although, I have not found limitations on JPEG.  With more flexibility and details to be edited on RAW, most of my phots are shot using JPEG.  How to Measure a Horse, was photographed all in RAW-again lucky mistake, then I converted each shot to JPEG after editing.  I am pleased with these results although timely, it was worth it.

Photography at Night https://jackiestevens.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/11/photography-at-night With only a few hours limited to the day to shoot--my photography, recently, has forced its way to shoot at night.  During film days and 35mm cameras, carrying around a clunky flash was awkward and cumbersome, so I steered away from night time photography.  With the age of Digital cameras, the ability to shoot without the flash while allowing light in-or back light, sometimes called the Flash Off feature, is an excellent way to capture night time shots without disturbing the surrounding around you.  The Flash Off feature proves useful in situations where Flash is Prohibited as well.  All photos shot in the Route 110 Delights were shot in this method.
